Similarities between Coldplay and J'en ai Marre
Notice anything similar about J'en ai Marre and Viva la Vida?

Alizée should sue their pants off. Radiohead-lite has no business stealing another artists music!
|
lol I just got "Viva la Vida" from iTunes today

Coldplay is :(

I think it's just the violins.
|
yeah just the violins

Hardly, the movements are nearly the same. The key, the tone. Very very close in my opinion. Actually the only thing different are the instruments and of course the voice and the lyrics. |
Sorry but i don't understand what the big deal is here. I guess i can kind of hear somewhat of a similarity, but it is passing at best. IMHO the thing that really drives J'en Ai Marre! is the 4 synthesized violin notes that come in (I think) every 4 measures or so. Nothing like that, that i could pick out, in the Coldplay song.

First I watched the video, and I thought to myself "whatever does this have to do with J'en ai marre?"
Then I realized that I was watching the Violet Hill video. I watched a bit of Viva la Vida, and yeah, extremely similar song framework. However, remember that absolutely everything in music has been done before. It just so happens that in this case, one group is very popular, and the other is beloved of us. |
Hah... someone made a video. :p

I listen to it and it doesn't sound even close to J'en Ai Marre.
|
Chris Martin uses too much falsetto.
Compare him to James LaBrie or Maynard Keenan, and you've got yourself a failed Coldplay vocalist. :p |
I can see the similarity, but its not similar enough for Alizee to win the case in a court of law
|
She doesn't need to prove this in court, we all know she was the classic, she certainly looked better doing her song, and Coldplay is cheesy alternative rock with a Thom Yorke lookalike as a vocalist. :p
(no offense to them, I liked the Rush of Blood to the Head album) |
lol omg Coldplay used violins too!? Sue them Alizée! She was deffinately the first person every to write any song that sounds anything like J'en ai Marre.. I mean she did write it.. didn't she? ..and she was the first ever if she did.. right?
And where does Coldplay get off being famous! I liked Radiohead before anyone had even heard of them, and they were around before Coldplay, hence, Coldplay must be terrible at life and anyone in the same genre is just a knock-off! I wish everyone had a muscial opinion as sophisticated as mine. |
Lol, is this a joke? Seriously, they don't sound anything alike.

Espire is right. The basic song structure of both songs uses the same 4 chords in the same order: C# D# G# Fm. They are both in the same key as well. The rhythm is somewhat different and the vocal melody is definitely different. The songs are probably not close enough to win a lawsuit, but I wouldn't doubt Coldplay was at least subconsciously influenced by having heard J’en ai marre in the past. It’s a common problem for songwriters. That 4 chord pattern has been around forever and has been used in many popular songs in one form or another. Usually the progression starts on the G#. MF/LB wrote J’en ai marre.

The violins are similar not only in that they are both violins, but in the filtering and editing done to the violins, in addition to the melodies played by the violins themselves. No, using violins does not make this song copied. I never said that it was copied at all, in fact. |
Another point of interest.
Coldplay is preferably soothing mind-theater stuff, it is very Radiohead-esque. Whereas Alizée steals the ever-untamed souls of the male specimen(and occasional female) with catchy upbeat or deep hearted melodies. |

Sorry. Close but no cigar.
Different enough that I can't say one copied the other. |

Sorry, a bit, yes. :o But, I didn't mean you specifically, just in general. |
