I thought they sounded somewhat alike but after listening to them being played back to back, it's hard to tell them apart

Yeah they do sound a similar but i've heard much more disturbing instances of songs sounding alike. Worst offenders? Avril Lavigne & Nickelback! Behold the laziness!

Same chords, same key, same feel, different tempos.

For crap's sake, my wife even thought "Viva la Vida" was the song by "that cute little French girl".

The similarities are negligible. Only the beginning sounds somewhat similar. The main melody is different. The feeling is also completely different. The Coldplay song sounds somewhat melancholic while JEAM is a sunny, bright feel-good-song. Please open your ears.

It's the same chord progression. C-D-G-Em

Lots of songs have used that chord progression, sure Viva La Vida copied the chord progression, but nobody copyrights a chord progression, it's for universal use. Not to mention the J'en ai Marre rhythm is completely top spot, whereas the Viva La Vida rhythm is syncopated. The lyrics are also different, the whole feel of both songs are different, just because they sound similar does not mean they are.

If, Coldplay, however, deliberately used the SAME violin track from J'en ai Marre, spot on the same, then we have a case.

How can your wife think Viva La Vida is the song by Alizée, it's a male vocalist, cmon?

So I thought I heard Alizee coming from a car next to me yesterday in Passadena, California. The car slips past me and I keep an eye on it. I go around another car, I gotta know if someone ELSE in california is jamming on Alizee. So I try to pace the car for a few blocks and get next to it at a light and it's coldplay. COLDPLAY??? that's just wrong!! And that's when I knew it was SO similar.

From these two youtube videos we're not the only ones to notice this.

Hopefully the lead singer of Cold Play will stop before we have to look at him in a little black one piece showing a fish on his ass.

I remember some person on youtube saying how it was Alizée who copied them.. I never knew Alizée was capable of traveling through time.
