For the most part, although French pop isn't the same as American pop. French pop tends to have darker elements (some songs are written in minor keys), while it seems like most recent American pop is bright and upbeat. That wasn't necessarily true in the 1970s (I LOVE American and British pop from the 70s), but I think it is in the 1990s and 2000s.
